Wolfgang Luthe (1922-1985) was a German physician and psychotherapist, who brought autogenic training to the attention of the English-speaking world.

His contributions to autogenic training, and several decades of collaboration with JH Schultz, its founder, sometimes led to Luthe being credited as one of the originators of the method. Luthe training articles and courses champion this method as a therapeutic modality in some diseases.

Luthe was born in 1922 in Lubeck. He received the MD degree in Hamburg in 1947. As a junior trainee, he met JH Schultz, who was the founder of autogenic training (AT), a self-hypnosis system, limited to Germany and Austria before and during World War Two. Luthe was impressed with the AT effect on asthma and became Schultz's patron. Their collaboration continued throughout Schultz's lifetime, though Luthe emigrated to Canada in the late 1940s.

She is in clinical practice in Montreal. As a member of the International Institute of Stress, founded by Hans Selye, he demonstrated the effect of stress reduction on autogenic exercise. He teaches at the University of Montreal and McGill University, including psychology and psychiatric postgraduate training programs.

The first book, Autogenic Training: The Psychophysiology Approach in Psychotherapy , co-authored by Schultz, appeared in 1959. It was based on Schulz's 1932 book, and subsequent updates, available only in German. It was the first presentation of an autogenic training book in English. A series of six volumes, Autogenic Therapy followed; the first three volumes were written with Schultz; the last three were written independently after Schultz's death. His numerous publications include journal articles and training guides.

More

In Luthe's view, social conditioning disrupts what the body and mind naturally do when in distress; Off-loading exercise improves the autogenic process by using the awareness of the body and mind to acknowledge and accept, and then manage the emotional release safely and constructively. According to him, the natural homeostatic mechanism not only regulates physiological processes, such as fluid and electrolyte balance and temperature, but functional impairment of cognitive or emotional traits. He considers autogenic techniques as a means of stimulating and better applying the natural homeostatic mechanism of the brain.

He contributes a number of his own innovations for autogenic therapy, such as autogenic neutralization techniques, autogenic abreaction, autogenic verbalization, and deliberate off-loading exercise. He encourages autogenic training as a therapeutic modality in some diseases. In 1961, he described the therapeutic significance of "autogenic release", which was considered only as a "training symptom" or a side effect of basic autogenic training.

He assists in the establishment of the International Committee for Training and Autogenic Therapy (ICAT). The training center at Lac du Deux Montagnes, near Montreal, attracts international students such as Malcolm Carruthers, founder of the British Autogenic Society, and Josà ©  © Luis GonzÃÆ'¡lez de Rivera, founder of Asociacion EspaÃÆ'  ± ola de Psicoterapia. He often visits Japan, where he is the scientific director of the Oskar Vogt Institute and visiting professor at Kyushu University School of Medicine and Hospital.

Late career

In the 1970s, he worked on methods to mobilize individual creativity, as described in his 1976 book, Creativity of Mobilization Techniques .

In 1979, Luthe moved to Vancouver, British Columbia. He continued his clinical work and writing, and got in touch with Simon Fraser University. He is involved in the application of competitive autogenic methods for athletics. At the time of his death, he was preparing for the German edition of Autogenic Therapy, and writing biographies of Oskar Vogt, the Berlin neurologist and brain researcher, who, around the turn of the 20th century, had observed an important autohypnosis Schultz's formulation of standard autogenic exercises.
