straight leg elevation , also called the Las̮'̬gue , Las̮'̬gue test or Lazarevi? Signs , is a test performed during a physical examination to determine whether a patient with low back pain has an underlying disc herniated, often located at L5 (the fifth lumbar spinal cord).

Technology
With the patient lying on his back on the examination table or examination floor, the examiner raises the patient's feet when his knee is straight.
Variation is lifting the leg when the patient is sitting. However, this reduces the sensitivity of the test.
To make this test more specific, the ankle can be dorsiflexion and the cervical spine flexed. This increases the stretching of nerve roots and dura.

Interpretation
If the patient has sciatic pain when the straight leg is at an angle between 30 and 70 degrees, then the test is positive and the herniated disc is the possible cause of the pain. Negative tests show the possible different causes for back pain.
A meta-analysis reports accuracy as:
- 91% sensitivity
- Specificity 26%
If lifting the opposite leg causes pain (straight or contralateral leg crossing):
- 29% sensitivity
- 88% specificity
Las̮'̬gue Signal
The Las̮'̬gue sign is named after Charles Las̮'̬gue (1816-1883). In 1864 Las̮'̬gue describes signs of developing back pain when stretching the knee when the foot is removed. In 1880 the Serbian physician Laza Lazarevi? describes a straight leg up test as used today, so the mark is often called the Lazarevi sign in Serbia and several other countries.
