Online speech therapy or telepractice is the use of technology to provide high-speed internet speech therapy, a webcam, a headset with a microphone, or any other form of communication. Online therapy is a clinical setting in which patients and certified pathologists speak the language of communicating and interacting face-to-face over the Internet. This session involves a series of therapeutic exercises including listening, speaking, reading and writing. The video recording is assessed by the pathologist to generate an activity report to evaluate progress and use.
Telepractice is a method of reaching out to students and individuals in remote locations. Telepraktik is defined by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) as the use of technology to provide speech therapy services to remote areas. Janet Brown, Director of health services at SLPA at ASHA has stated "research shows that by telepractice speech-language pathologists can provide speech therapy services, with the same results, like being there in person."

Assessment for online talk therapy consists of informal oral exams by a licensed trained professional through video conferencing or web applications. Patients were initially screened for communication disorders with diagnosis and consultation for provision counseling including cognitive aspects of communication, syntax, hypophonia and upper aerodigestive function. Treatment may include speech sound production, fluency, language, cognition, and written language.
The therapist creates an updated assessment or report document after each session. The document is reported to parents or referral sources in accordance with HIPAA and FERPA. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act also known as HIPAA is a federal law that protects the patient's medical records. HIPAA specifically protects "individually identifiable health information." The Family Education and Privacy Act known as FERPA is a federal law that protects students' education records. FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's educational records until they are 18 years old or move to a higher school than the secondary school level, thus making them "qualified students." Clinical departments at the University also offer speech and language therapy services where they record video sessions between doctors and patients secured through password security services.
