The Mercer University Health Sciences Center opened on July 1, 2012. The Center for Health Sciences has campuses in Macon, Atlanta, Savannah and Columbus in the US state of Georgia.
The Board of Trustees of Mercer University established the Center for Health Sciences on April 20, 2012. The Center provides centralized administration and unity of goals for university programs in medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and healthcare professionals.
The Center for Health Sciences enrolls more than 1,700 students, employs over 400 full-time staff and staff, and graduates more than 500 doctors, nurses and nursing educators, physician assistants, pharmacists, physical therapists, family therapists, public health professionals, and biomedical scientists year.
Dr. Hewitt W. (Ted) Matthews, Dean of the College of Pharmacy, heads the Center for Health Sciences as Senior Senior Representative of the University for Health Sciences.

School of Medicine
The School of Medicine, founded in 1982, is partly state funded and only accepts the inhabitants of Georgia into the Doctor of Medicine program. The school's core mission is to train primary care physicians and other health professionals to serve in rural and medically underserved areas of Georgia. In addition to the Doctor of Medicine, the school offers a master's program in family therapy and anesthesia nurses.
The Faculty of Medicine has two four-year campuses; the original campus in Macon and the second campus in Savannah. Mercer opened the Savannah campus in 2008, the first medical school in southern Georgia, when the university received additional state funds to expand its existing partnership with Memorial University Medical Center. The third and fourth year Mercer students have completed a clinical rotation at the Memorial since 1996. The Macon and Savannah campuses are managed by the Senior Associate Dean who reports to a Dean.
The four School of Medicine education hospitals are the Central Georgia Medical Center in Macon, Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, Columbus Regional Medical Center in Columbus, and St. John's Hospital. Francis in Columbus. The Columbus campus offers clinical rotation for third and fourth year students.
The School of Medicine also has a clinical component - Mercer Medicine - where doctors of the Faculty of Internal Medicine and Family provide medical care to patients, while supporting a clinical learning environment for medical students.
In April 2011, Mercer announced a new Doctor of Clinical Psychology Doctorate program with the first student to enroll in the fall of 2012.
Academy of Pharmacy
The College of Pharmacy, founded in 1903, was an independent school in Atlanta until merge with Mercer in 1959. College, ranked by US News and World Report among the top five private pharmaceutical schools in the country, moved from a downtown location to the Atlanta Mercer campus in 1992. In 1972, the School of Southern Pharmacy offered the Pharmacy Doctor as an advanced clinical degree in Pharmacy that required an additional 2 years. Pharmacy Doctor Students first graduated in 1973. In 1981, college became the first in the southeast and the fifth in the country to offer Pharmaceutical Pharmacists, the highest pharmacy education level, as the only professional degree.
The college was named School of Southern Pharmacy until 2006 when it was named College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences; name changes reflect the new physician's assistant and physical therapy program. The college receives its current name in 2013 when physician assistants and physical therapy programs are shifted to the new College of Health Professions.
In July 2013, Mercer announced plans to build a new College of Pharmacy on the Atlanta campus; construction will begin in 2014 with completion by 2015.
Georgia Baptist College of Nursing
Georgia Baptist College of Nursing was founded in 1901 as the Baptist Tabernacle Infirmary, an independent institution in Atlanta. The college was renamed Baptist Tabernacle Infirmary and Training School for Nurses when nursing education began in 1902. The college, named Georgia Baptist College of Nursing in 1993, joined Mercer in 2001 and moved from a downtown location to the Atlanta campus Mercer in 2002 Colleges offer undergraduate and graduate programs and provide clinical experience in many of Atlanta's regional hospitals and at other community facilities.
The college began offering the Doctor of Philosophy in a Nursing degree in August 2009 and a Doctor of Nursing Practice in August 2010.
Beginning in August 2013, the college will offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing at the Macon campus; degree programs will continue on the Atlanta campus allowing students to attend any of the locations.
College of Health Professions
The College of Health Professions opens on July 1, 2013. The twelve-member academic unit of Mercer offers Doctor of Physical Therapy along with a master's degree physician and community health program previously offered by the College of Pharmacy and School of Medicine. The new colleges allow for the addition of future health sciences programs, such as occupational therapy, as well as the expansion of existing programs on several Mercer campuses.
The physical therapy department and Shepherd Center in Atlanta offer a 13-month post-professional residency that provides accelerated training for physical therapists. The Shepherd Center is one of the best rehabilitation hospitals in the country; the residency program is one of only 14 in the country.

Education partnerships
Piedmont Healthcare
The Center for Health and Learning is an educational partnership between the School of Medicine, the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, and the Piedmont Healthcare of Atlanta. Piedmont is a non-profit organization with several hospitals, including Piedmont Hospital and Piedmont Fayette Hospital, both recognized as the best in the country, a group of primary care physicians with about 20 clinics, and a network of doctors with about 500 members. Family therapy and nursing students are given a learning experience at various facilities throughout the Piedmont system.
