History

Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy and an Irish woman early in the 18th century, had a bold vision. He believes that nothing is more productive than good for society rather than women's thorough education.

Mary Leo Gallagher's mother, another Sister of Mercy, continued the tradition and opened the doors of the College of Saint Mary in 1923. At the old Continental Hotel at 15th and Castelar Streets, work began. Church schools need teachers. To be effective in this position, Mrs. Gallagher believes that women need a strong liberal arts education. Gallagher's mother achieved this achievement when women won the vote just three years earlier.

In November 1950, the sisters bought 80 hectares (320,000 m 2 ) for $ 150,000 alongside a 72nd Street dirt road and what would become Mercy Road. A $ 3 million construction project began in March 1953 and in May 1955, the College of Saint Mary was a reality. That year, 255 students enrolled and in 1958 the College of Saint Mary has been a fully accredited college for four years.
