Histori
CareSource was founded in Dayton, Ohio by a group of community leaders concerned with the goal of extending health care to underserved populations. The plan was originally called Dayton Regional Health Plan (DAHP) which was founded by three hospital CEOs and is located at its first headquarters in the Dayton Association Hospital's office. Pamela Morris became the company's first CEO, and has led the company from the start. DAHP began with a $ 500,000 grant from the state of Ohio to address the growing problems with health care issues of low-income citizens.
Led by Pamela Morris, the company handled some regulatory barriers from 1987 to 1989 from the Ohio Department of Insurance. DAHP must raise funds, obtain HMO licenses and obtain federal exemptions allowing companies to operate solely as mandatory registration plans. DAHP will be the first mandatory Medicaid-administered care program in 1989 In 1993 the federal liberation will be over and to allow the organization to proceed (rather than maintain the mandatory 75/25 obligatory and voluntary enrollees) congressional action will be required. This means that at the time, 25% of the plan members could not be in Medicaid or Medicare. This overcomes this obstacle when US Congressman Dave Hobson intervenes on his behalf to get an exception for DAHP.
In 1996, DAHP expanded into the Columbus market with their Medicaid plan by purchasing a plan managed by United Healthcare. With this expansion, Dayton Regional Health Plan became the largest Medicaid HMO in Ohio. Plans in Columbus retained the previous name, MedPlan. In 1997, the plan acquired Butler's Health Plan and gained over 6,000 members in Butler County. During this time, all plans operated by the Dayton Area Health plan retained the name of their area.
In 2000, DAHP consolidated all of its health plans under one name - CareSource. This year, the company has about 70,000 members. In 2003 that number exceeded 320,000.
In 2004, the organization was ranked as the sixth largest Medicaid care plan managed in the United States by Interstudy . Also in 2004, the CareSource University corporate training program was opened to educate employees and keep service standards high.
In 2006, seeking support for nonprofits around him, CareSource established the CareSource Foundation. The Foundation works with non-profit organizations that share in the mission of serving the under-served. This has given a total of 693 grants to nonprofit organizations so far. In the same year when the economy declined in Dayton, Ohio and big companies like the National Cash Register, General Motors, and Delphi closed or left town. In 2007, employment in this area remained weak, but CareSource saw business growth and became the only Medicaid Managed Care provider offering services in all 88 areas in Ohio. In that year, CareSource began working at a new headquarters in downtown Dayton, demonstrating the company's commitment to the city where it was founded. This project is the construction of the largest urban building in Ohio at the time. Construction was completed in 2009 at the company's $ 55 million headquarters on the corner of Main Street and Monument Avenue in downtown Dayton. The 300,000-square-foot building is the first new office building in the city center since before 2000. The architect of the building is the BHDP Architecture.
In 2010, it was the country's third-largest Medicaid HMO, with revenues of $ 2.5 billion and 800,000 members across Ohio and Michigan. In 2010, CareSource announced the expansion of its carrier network in Southeastern Ohio through a partnership with Quality Care Partners (QCP), a hospital-physician organization (PHO).
In 2012, the company announced a partnership with Humana. This partnership works to serve double eligible populations, or individuals eligible for Medicare and Medicaid in Ohio. In October 2012, the company expanded to Kentucky Medicaid with Humana, where the plan was known as Humana - CareSource.
In 2013, CareSource announced that it would move some employees to a second office at 40 West Second Street in Downtown Dayton. 200 employees were transferred to the building, across from the Schuster Center in Dayton while others remained at the headquarters building a few blocks away.
CareSource is the third largest company in the Dayton Region by 2013, behind AK Steel and Speedway, ranked by total revenue. From 2011 to 2012, the company's revenue grew 21.43 percent to $ 3.4 billion. CareSource's percent growth is more than double the average revenue growth of 99 of the largest Dayton companies in that time span. After passing the Affordable Care Act, CareSource works with provider partners in 2013 to create an affordable option for Ohioans. They enter the Health Insurance Exchange and create a product that allows companies to enter the commercial insurance market.
In 2014, MyCare Ohio is launched to integrate Medicare and Medicaid benefits. CareSource uses this opportunity to create plans that assimilate Medicaid and Medicare into a CareSource health plan. The company will also exceed 2,000 employees and occupy offices in three buildings in downtown Dayton by the end of the year. The company also announced plans to expand into the health insurance markets of Kentucky and Indiana. CareSource's constant growth with health care reform and Medicaid expansion makes it the third largest company in the Dayton region by 2014.
CareSource celebrates 25 years as one of the largest and largest Medicaid Managed Plans in Ohio by 2014. The company then serves more than 1 million consumers in Ohio and Kentucky.
By the end of 2014 and early 2015 CareSource's new division is launched to meet other unmet needs from the Ohio Medicaid population of the company. This division, CareSource Life Services, started working with members in the Dayton area. Through a partnership with Fuyao Glass America, the company can arrange interviews for 40 members for full-time jobs with manufacturing companies. However, Life Services is not intended only as a work center, it is intended to provide a number of resources. Karin VanZant, co-founder and executive director of Think Tank, was hired to oversee the program. Under VanZant's leadership, the program evolves to address other aspects that contribute to a person's health including their housing and economic stability. According to the Dayton Business Journal, this new approach informs how CareSource is beginning to see its members. Companies are starting to see how aspects of Medicaid and social services can be linked and co-ordinated to improve member welfare.
In 2016, CareSource began serving members in West Virginia through healthcare products and was awarded a contract to serve the Medicaid population in Indiana and Georgia, extending the company's geographic reach. The growth in membership was offset by the growing number of employees. This resulted in the need for additional office space near the company's headquarters in Dayton. Rents are signed for some employees to move into space on two Kettering Tower floors in downtown Dayton to provide space for a total of 2,200 employees in the city. To meet the company's long-term needs for additional space, CareSource announced in October 2016 that the company will build a new 6-storey office building in downtown Dayton. The new building will provide space for 800 employees and create an environment like a campus in the city center. The new office, named Pamela Morris Center to honor its founding heritage, will be located on First and Jefferson streets and become the first new building in downtown Dayton since the company's headquarters opened in 2008.
CareSource passes AK Steel to become the second largest revenue-generating company in the Dayton region. By 2017, the company has $ 8.8 billion in revenue and 4,000 employees.
The CareSource Foundation also celebrates its 10th anniversary giving back to the public that the company serves in 2016. For ten years, the Foundation provided over $ 14.5 million in grants to more than 1,000 different organizations throughout Ohio. In 2016 alone, the CareSource Foundation invested more than $ 2.8 million in 147 nonprofit organizations to strengthen the network of health and human services organizations.
In April 2018, Pamela Morris retired as President and CEO. In May 2018, CareSource appointed Erhardt Preitauer as CEO. Preitauer is a former CEO of Horizon NJ Health.
