Virginia Mae Axline (1911-1988) is a psychologist and one of the pioneers in the use of play therapy. He writes the book Dibs in Search of Self . He is also an author of Play Therapy .

The practice of playing therapy is largely still based on Axline's work. In the 1940s, he began developing non-narrative playing therapy, principles based on Carl Rogers's new human-centered approach. In his first published work, he set out eight basic principles of non-directional playing therapy.

In 1964, he published Dibs in Search of Self, which follows the path of a young patient, Dibs, throughout his journey by playing therapy with Axline as his therapist. This is a transcript of almost every word of the weekly session that follows this five-year-old child and his appearance for health and function. Axline studied at Ohio State University and Columbia University. He teaches at New York University School of Medicine and School of Education. For seven years, he was on the faculty of Columbia University Teachers College and, before that, spent three years as a research fellow and faculty member at the University of Chicago.
