The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center TTUHSC is a multi-campus institution based in Lubbock, Texas with an additional campus located in Abilene, Amarillo, Dallas, El Paso and Permian Basin. TTUHSC serves more than 100 districts in western Texas. The University is a separate institution from Texas Tech University; both universities are among the four universities that are part of the Texas Tech University System.

School

The school started in 1983 as the Allied Health Sciences School and currently has campuses in Amarillo, Lubbock, and the Permian Basin. More than 1,100 students are currently enrolled in 18 different degree programs at the doctoral, master and baccalaureate levels. These courses include areas of study, such as athletic training, audiology, clinical management, medical laboratory science, molecular pathology, physical and occupational therapy, physician assistants, rehabilitation, and speech pathology.

School of Medicine

The Faculty of Medicine, University of Texas Tech Health Center in Lubbock has provided over 3,000 Doctor of Medicine degrees since its first graduation class in 1974. The school is assigned to train doctors to help meet the health care needs of West Texas residents, a population now over 2, 5 million people. When the school opened, West Texas had one doctor for every 1,300 residents. Currently, the ratio is about one doctor for every 750 residents. Students spend the first two years of their studies in Lubbock and the last two years they study in Amarillo, Odessa or Lubbock. A large self-proclaimed initiative for schools is to "recruit innovative and innovative research faculty and to develop graduate students and postdoctoral peers for a lifelong career in medical research."

School of Nursing

The school has campuses in Lubbock, Permian Basin, Highland Lakes, and Abilene; and it educates more than 1,000 students every year. Bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees in nursing are issued by the school. The School of Nursing offers the only Doctor of Nursing Practice program in West Texas. The school is known for its alternatives to traditional education opportunities including online courses for registered nurses to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing program for students with a bachelor's degree in another field, and Veterans for Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees for veterans with military medical experience who wish to obtain a nursing degree but already have sufficient knowledge that sets them apart from a traditional nursing student.

School of Pharmacy

The School of Pharmacy administration center is located in Amarillo and the school has regional campus locations in Lubbock, Dallas and Abilene. The school has two sites in the Dallas area: one located in the North Texas Medical Administration Veterans Medical Center and the second is located in the central Dallas medical district.

The Lubbock Faculty and residents also operate the TTUHSC Pharmacy, which provides medicines and biology to the Texas Regional Regional Police Department of Montford Regional Medical Facilities; Institute of International Pain TTUHSC; Geriatric Garrison Education and Care Center; and TTUHSC clinics in Lubbock, Odessa and El Paso. Pharmacy TTUHSC also provides telepharmacy services to rural communities of Turkey and Earth, Texas. The first telepharmacy recipe issued in Texas occurred Sept. 18, 2002, between TTUHSC Pharmacy and Turkey Medical Clinic.

Destination

The presence of TTUHSC has had an impact on access to health care in West Texas. More than 20% of practicing doctors in West Texas are medical school graduates or TTUHSC medical school graduates. The School of Nursing and Health Professions affects West Texas, with most graduates living in West Texas to pursue their chosen profession. More than 80% of Pharmacy School graduates have chosen to practice in Texas.

Tradition

White Coat Ceremony

Usually held in August, a group of first-year medical students participate in the White Coat Ceremony each year. This event is a rite of passage for first year medical students because they wear their coats and take Hippocratic vows that affirm their commitment to the highest ethical standards and patient care. At TTUHSC School of Medicine in Lubbock, a ceremony was held at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center.

  • Donna Campbell, a member of the Texas Senate, is an emergency room physician from New Braunfels. He graduated from Texas Tech with a M.D. in 1989.
