History

The Swedish Hospital of Covenant was established as a Collared House on April 1, 1886 by the Swedish Evangelical Mission Community Mission. The original note from the Home of Mercy states that the original hospital had 12 iron beds, two wooden sinks, bookshelves, sofas, swings and a table with six chairs.

In 1903, the hospital completed its first expansion with the construction of Delano Hall.

In 1899, the hospital started a nursing training program. By 1923, fifty doctors had joined the staff, a complete system of medical records had begun and the hospital was well-recognized by the American Medical Association and the American College of Surgeons.

In 2004, the Swedish Covenant Hospital became the only member in Chicago of the Planetree Alliance, an organization that developed and implemented guidelines for patient-centered care. The hospital maintained its membership until 2009, making it the longest affiliate in Illinois. Of the 5,000 US hospitals affiliated with Planetree, only 125 are fully committed to Planetree's philosophy to care for the whole body, mind and soul of the patient.

Beginning in 2009, the Swedish Covenant Hospital has performed extensive retrograding on campus hospitals to measure energy efficiency.

In 2012, the lawsuit was filed against the Swedish Covenant which received national attention after the Associated Press reported the lawsuit. The lawsuit alleges that hospitals failed to fulfill their mission by not providing sufficient free care and reduced fees for two uninsured low-income patients.

In March 2014, the Swedish Covenant Hospital became affiliated with St. George's, University of London for clinical rotation.

In the autumn of 2014, the Swedish Covenant Hospital opened the Mayora Rosenberg Women's Health Center.

In November 2014, the Swedish Covenant Hospital announced a partnership with Land of Lincoln Health (LLH) and began offering health insurance packages to individuals and small businesses.
