Standard maintenance (Active Controls). Treatments are usually given to people with certain conditions. In many studies, the control group received standard treatment while the treatment group received experimental treatment. After the clinical trial, the researchers compared the results of both groups to see whether the experimental treatment was better than, as good or as unlikely as the standard treatment.

Shared controls are active (positive)

In active control experiments (or positive controls), subjects are randomly assigned to a test treatment or to active control treatment. Such clinical trials are usually double-blind, but this is not always possible; many oncology experiments, for example, are considered difficult or impossible to blind due to different regimens, different delivery routes, and different toxicities. Active control experiments can have two different purposes with respect to indicating efficacy: (1) to demonstrate efficacy of a test treatment by indicating it as well as an effective treatment or (2) to demonstrate efficacy by demonstrating the superiority of the test treatment for active control. They can also be used with the primary purpose of comparing the efficacy and/or security of the two treatments. Whether the goal of the trial is to demonstrate the efficacy of a new treatment or to compare two treatments, the question of whether the experiment will be able to differentiate effectively from a less effective or ineffective treatment is essential.
