St. Catherine University (also known as St. Kate's ) is a private Catholic liberal arts college, located in St. Louis. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. Founded as one of the first institutions of higher education specifically for women in the Midwest, this school is known as the College of St. Catherine until 2009. Today Kate offers baccalaureate programs for women plus graduates and links programs for women and men.
The University has an average of about 5,000 students each year. It is a leader in recruiting and enrolling minority students and non-traditional students. St. Catherine's Weekend College - now College for Adults - is the second similar program in the country and the first in the Upper Midwest. St. Kate is also the country's first private college to launch efforts to attract, welcome and defend Hmong students - making it home to one of the largest population of Hmong scholars in the country.
St. Kate was ranked 11th in 2018 "America's Best University - Regional University (Midwest)" hosted by US. News & amp; World Report . St. Kate is placed second among Minnesota's institutions in its category.

St. Catherine University was founded as a College of St.. Catherine in 1905 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, under the leadership of Mother Seraphine Ireland. The university is named after St. Catherine of Alexandria, a fourth-century Egyptian lay philosopher who suffered martyrdom because of his faith.
A site for St. Kate was chosen on the second highest hill of town in St. Louis. Paul - in what is now known as Highland Park. Hugh Derham of Rosemount contributed $ 20,000 for the first building. Derham Hall opened in January 1905, offering classes for high school dorm students and undergraduate college students. The middle school eventually went to its own campus and joined the Lasallian-run College of Cretin to form the Cretin-Derham Hall College in 1987. The top division courses were first offered in the academic year 1911-12. In the spring of 1913, a Bachelor of Arts degree was awarded on the first two students to complete four years at a new institution. In 1917, St. Kate earned full accreditation from the Association of Colleges and Colleges of the Northern Center.
During World War II, St. Kate responds to critical nursing shortcomings by extending her program to include a baccalaureate degree in nursing and taking over the leadership of St. John's hospital. Joseph and St. Mary as well as nursing schools - and partnered with US Cadet Nursing Corps to provide students with financial assistance in exchange for nursing services. More than 170 alumni of St. Catherine served in the military hospital between 1942 and 1948.
Before the 1970s, students would take classes at St. University. Thomas was nearby, then a college for men.
Expansion to Minneapolis
Campus St. Paul is the location for most day classes, afternoons/weekends, and graduate programs, with 110 hectares of forest in Highland Park neighborhood, a central location between downtown Twin Cities. Campus St. Kate's coeducational Minneapolis in Riverside neighborhood offers degree programs and certificates in various health areas. In 1887, the Sisters of St. Joseph responded to the need for trained nurses in the region who founded St. Mary School of Nursing at St. Mary in Minneapolis. Student nurse in the three-year nurse program Registered living in a dormitory in the hospital while studying first-year academics at the College of St. Catherine. In 1964, the hospital program was expanded and opened under the title St. Mary's Junior College . St. Mary's offers associate degrees in health care, including the first occupational therapy assistant program and the first physical therapist assistant program in the United States. St. Mary's earns St. Junior's College Mary in 1985. In 1987, Fairview Hospital was combined with St. Mary's Hospital to become Riverside Medical Center.
Move to University
On June 1, 2009, the College of St. Catherine changed her name to St. Catherine University.

Schools and colleges
In St. Catherine University, students enroll in one of three colleges:
- College baccalaureate for Women
- Graduate College
- Higher Education for Adults
Students then continue their majors or courses, either on the St. University campus. Paul or Minneapolis, through four disciplinary schools:

The school, collectively, is home to over 100 areas of study - widely available in traditional traditional and non-traditional hybrid formats (night, weekend and online). St. Kate also has nearly 60 majors baccalaureate, plus 35 or more through Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities, as well as dozens of minors and nine pre-professional programs.
Partnership
St. Kate's is a member of Twin School Association of Twin Cities (ACTC), a consortium of five private liberal arts colleges located in Minneapolis or St.. Paul. This partnership allows students to take classes or complete majors at one of the other universities. The University also partners with 900 clinical training sites to make clinical education meaningful and relevant for St. Kate. Partner organizations include Allina Health Systems, Fairview Health Services, Health Care Systems and HealthPartners.
In the fall of 2011, St. Kate became the first university in Minnesota to partner with the Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program (formerly known as the Peace Corps Fellows/USA program) to offer a Peace Corps volunteer a fellowship to a Master of Arts in Leadership Organization.
The Ended Mission Seat
Unlike many colleges and universities that have set up separate departments for Catholic studies, liberal arts and women's studies, St. Catherine University has set up three different seats:
- Blessed Seats in Catholic identity
- Endowed Seats in Women's Education
- Endowed Seats in Liberal Arts
Each position is supported by granted funds and program donations. The honorable seats will work as a team to:
- start, plan and oversee staff and staff development programs;
- Fund faculty and staff work focused on integrating missions into the syllabus, the program
- requirements and co-curricular activities;
- purchase library ownership and other relevant materials;
- serves as a teaching resource, especially for guest classes, recruiting speakers, and planning workshops.
Academics
St. Catherine was the first Catholic college or university in the world to be awarded the Phi Beta Kappa chapter, in October 1937. Kate has earned a high degree in a reputed institution. This tradition begins with the first president who regularly sends instructors for a term, summer or academic year to pursue graduate studies. St. Kate's has produced Fulbright Scholars as well.
St. Catherine educates women and men through undergraduate and graduate programs including colleagues, bachelors and postgraduate degrees. He has been committed for over a century to educate women to lead and influence.
The student/faculty ratio is 10: 1. The average class size is 18 in the traditional/day program, 13 in the College for Adults, undergraduate and 16 courses in the College for Adults, associate courses. In St. Catherine, a lively class, involves discussion to improve student communication and critical thinking skills. Students will find exchanges of ideas, perspectives, and life stories that flow freely, as well as opportunities for fieldwork, internships, study abroad and collaborative research with faculty.
In addition to taking courses directly related to the majors of their choice, baccalaureate students are required to complete one or two additional courses in arts, humanities and sciences to meet the University's liberal arts requirements.
Online OTA Program
By 2014, St. Catherine University extends the Occupational Therapy Assistant program to offer mixed learning options. Beginning in Virginia, and then progressing to California and Texas, the OTA Online program features 80% online and 20% on-site curricula, including a skills laboratory and fieldwork experience. The accredited program allows students to earn their associate degree in just 16 months.
Research and Academic Centers
St. Catherine University offers opportunities for research and faculty-mentoring through grant-funded departments and initiatives - as well as through these programs and national centers:
- Assisted Coaching Program (AMP) - creates a space for students and mentors to engage in intellectual creativity and collaboration through teaching, research, and program assistants. To make the experience more feasible for students, the program pays $ 11.25 per hour for about 10-12 hours per week per semester.
- The Mayo Innovation Scholarship Program - This program brings together undergraduate students from various disciplines to research the Mayo Clinic's discovery idea and create a business plan for medical products. Graduate student from Master of Arts St. Catherine in the Organizational Leadership program serves as a mentor for the student team.
- WHIR Center - The Women's Health Integrative Research Center (WHIR) is a laboratory devoted to interdisciplinary research on women's health. In addition to motion tracking equipment - such as 3-D electromagnetic motion systems, metabolic measurement units and heart rate monitoring systems - WHIR also has a wet lab that supports the processing and storage of human blood and saliva samples.. This is one of the few academic facilities of its kind. WHIR also serves as a ladder between degree programs in disciplines such as nursing, where students from two-year associate degree programs work with students earning a four-year degree or graduate.
- CATIE Center - Catherine University founded the CATIE Center in 2005 as a Collaboration for Teaching Progress. It is one of six centers working in partnership as the National Journalist Education Center. The CATIE Center offers resources and programs such as the Body Language online module, ASL Immersion, Deaf Mentor Training, and Interpreting for Deaf Mentah for students and working professionals. The Center hosts the National Symposium on Health Interpretation, which draws more than 150 interpreters to St. Petersburg. Kate every year.
- STEM National Center for Basic Education - This center serves as a center for outreach programs and services related to increased interest and skills in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) among students as young as grade four.
- The Human Anatomy Lab - Kate is home to the state's second largest college anatomy lab in the state. The 3,600-square-foot space includes two laboratories - each large enough to hold nine bodies - plus a shower, lockers, storage units, and cleaning chambers. At least eight different academic programs use labs, including orthoptics (undergraduate), studies of physician assistants (masters) and physical therapy (doctoral studies). Religious services are held at the beginning of each semester to help students thank them for their "silent teacher" generosity. The Honorable John C. Nienstedt, Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, blessed the lab on September 19, 2011.
Awards program
First year students or second year students who have achieved at least 3.5 GPA are eligible to apply to the Antonian Scholars University St. Catherine, which offers a rigorous academic program for promising learners, leaders, researchers, writers, artists, and creative thinkers. Antonian students are required to complete an independent creative project during the senior year. There are a total of 25 different Honor Societies.

St. Catherine University offers more than 150 study options abroad in 50 countries, from January to a year. More than 200 students Kate studied abroad every year.
Student life
Life residence
Eighty percent of St. John's first year students Catherine lives in nine dormitories on campus. Students have access to computer laboratories in halls and resident advisors (RAs) that provide ongoing support, guidance, and social activities. Each year, the University offers a learning community in several halls of residence. For example, Gryffindor Tower Learning Community is located on the fourth floor of Caecilian Hall, and its residents are required to take a four-credit course "Introduction to Novels" in the fall of 2012. This course features class discussions and written assignments around seven Harry Potter novels with themed activities - trivia and movie nights - in the residence hall.
Clubs and organizations
St. Catherine University has more than 50 student organizations, including student Senate, intramural sports, and women's choirs. Students can work on two student publications (The Wheel and Ariston).
Athletics
The St. Catherine University Wildcats competes in 11 inter-college sports at the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III and the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). Women's sports include basketball, ice hockey, cross country, softball, swimming and diving, dancing, track and field, soccer, tennis and volleyball. Leisure clubs and sports include aerobics, volleyball, basketball, soccer, tennis, and rock climbing. Renovated at 215, Aimee and Patrick Butler's Center for Sports and Fitness at St. Kate's is a female-oriented sports center, complete with eight-lane swimming pool, weightlifting room, delayed jogging track, spa and sauna. Benefits for student athletes appear in the Women's Health Integrative Research Center (WHIR) University. WHIR's advanced equipment can establish basic performance measurements and track athletic improvements over time.
Art and archive
St. Art Collection Catherine University comes from St. Kate in 1905. Today, more than 1,000 pieces consist of collections. Among them are works on paper - prints (etchings, carvings, woodcuts, lithographs and silkscreens), watercolors and drawings - as well as paintings and sculptures by artists from different countries and periods, including:
- Corita Kent, one of the most influential graphic design artists in America in the 20th century.
- Adolf Dehn, who helps define regionalism and caricature in American art.
- Clair Mairs, featured in Pioneer Modernis: Minnesota First Generation Female Artist.
- Giovanni Piranesi, one of the most prolific print makers of the 18th century.
- Ade Bethune, who made a unique contribution during the 20th century to the arts and architecture field as a liturgical artist, writer, and consultant.
In addition to paper files, the archive of St. Catherine University contains more than 8,000 photos and 4,500 artifacts. The archives are filled with rare and valuable items: some from before the Christian era, others from the early days of printing. Plus, The Heritage Edition of The Saint John's Bible, St Kate's limited reproduction of this famous Bible is a gift to the University by Lois Rogers '63 and her husband, John, in 2009.
There is also Gallery Catherine G. Murphy, which is an extension of the University's mission to integrate liberal arts and education. The gallery provides campus and public communities with access to art exhibitions, programming and the University Fine Arts Collection, all of which seek to maintain a strong women-centered presence in local and regional art communities. Featuring contemporary and historic artwork by all genders, The Catherine G. Murphy Gallery emphasizes visual art as a method to illuminate and explore global and emerging social issues that are based on women's perspectives.
