Ruth Westheimer (born June 4, 1928), better known as Dr. Ruth , is a German-born American sex therapist, media personality, and writer. His career in the media began in 1980 with a radio show, Speaking Sexually , which continued into 1990. He also held at least five television shows on Lifetime and other cable television from 1984 to 1993. He is also the author of about 40 books about various topics about sex and sexuality.

Early life and education
Westheimer was born Karola Ruth Siegel on June 4, 1928, in Wiesenfeld (near Karlstadt am Main), Germany, the only Orthodox Jewish Irma (nÃÆ' à © e Hanauer), a housekeeper and Julius Siegel, a wholesaler and son of the family in which Irma works. He was given an early basis in Judaism by his father, who took him regularly to the synagogue in Frankfurt, where they lived. In January 1939, he was sent to an orphanage in Switzerland by his mother and grandmother as part of Kindertransport after his father was taken by the Nazis. He stopped receiving his parents' mail in September 1941. In 1945, Westheimer learned that his parents had been killed in the Holocaust, possibly in the Auschwitz concentration camp.
Westheimer decides to emigrate to a compulsory British-controlled Palestine. There, at the age of 17, she "first had sex on a starry night, in a haystack, without contraception." He then told The New York Times that "I'm not happy about it, but I know it's much better now and so is everyone who listens to my radio program." Westheimer joined the Haganah in Jerusalem. Due to the height of 4Ã, 7 ft deep (1.40 m), he was trained as a reconnaissance and sniper. From this experience, he said, "I never killed anyone, but I know how to throw hand grenades and shoot." Westheimer was badly wounded in action by a bomb exploded during the Israeli War of Independence in 1948, and it was several months before he could walk again.
In 1950, Westheimer moved to France, where he studied and then taught psychology at the University of Paris. In 1956, he immigrated to the United States, settling in Washington Heights, Manhattan. Westheimer holds a M.A. in the field of sociology from The New School in 1959 and Ed.D. degree from Teachers College, Columbia University in 1970.
Westheimer became a naturalized American citizen in 1965. He regained his German citizenship in 2012 through the German Citizenship Project which enabled the descendants of the Germans who lost their citizenship during the Third Reich to reclaim their citizenship without losing the nationality of their home country.

Initial career
After receiving Ed.D., he worked briefly for Planned Parenthood and this experience encouraged him to continue studying human sexuality. He went on to work as a postdoctoral researcher for Helen Singer Kaplan in New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He continued to work there as Associate Professor Adjunct for five years. He also teaches at Lehman College, Brooklyn College, Adelphi University, Columbia University, and West Point.
Media career
Media career Dr. Ruth started in 1980 when her radio show, Speaking Sexually , debuted at WYNY-FM in New York City. She was offered this opportunity after she gave a talk to a New York broadcaster about the need for a sex education program to help deal with unwanted contraceptives and pregnancy. Betty Elam, community affairs manager at WYNY, was impressed with his talk and offered Westheimer $ 25 a week to make Sexual Speaking, which started as a 15-minute show aired every Sunday at midnight. In 1983, the show was a top-rated radio show in the area, and in 1984, NBC Radio began nationally syndicated, changing the name of the show to Dr. Ruth Show . He went on to produce his radio show until 1990. Described as, "Sister Wendy of Sexuality", Dr. Ruth helped revolutionize talks about sex and sexuality on radio and television, and she is famous for having, "an accent only psychologists can love." She became famous for being honest and funny, but respectful, and for tag phrases "Get some". A reporter described his unique voice as, "a cross between Henry Kissinger and Minnie Mouse."
In 1984, Westheimer began organizing several television programs on Lifetime (TV Network) and one in syndication. Her first show was Good Sex! With Dr. Ruth Westheimer , aired for half an hour at 10 pm on weeknights. The show expanded in 1985 to an entire hour and its name was changed to The Dr. Ruth Show . In 1987, he started a series of half-hour syndicates in many of the broadcast stations called, Dr. Ruth , co-hosted by Larry Angelo. Dr. Ruth returned to the Lifetime network in 1988 with The All New Dr. Ruth Show , which was followed in 1989 by two teenage suggestions called What's Up, Dr. Ruth? and incoming call event, You are currently broadcasting with Dr. Ruth in 1990. In 1993, Westheimer and Israeli TV host Arad Nir hosted a Hebrew talk show, titled Min Tochnit , on the newly opened Israel Channel 2 This event is similar to the US Sexual Speaking event. The show name, Min Tochnit , is a play of words: literally "Sort of program", but "Min" (???) in Hebrew also means "sex" and "gender".
During the 1980s, "Dr. Ruth", became a household name and he made guest appearances on several network television shows, including The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and Late Night with David Letterman me. He also appeared frequently in the syndicate of the Hollywood Squares revival that lasted from 1986 to 1989. In the 1990s, Westheimer emerged as himself in episode 89 of Quantum Leap, the episode of the title "Dr. Ruth". She appeared on the album Tom Chapin Pretty Planet It , in the song "Two Kinds of Seagulls", where she and Chapin sang various animals that reproduce sexually. "It takes two to tickle", the song said. Dr. Ruth has also appeared in several commercial ads, including the Honda Prelude commercial 1994, and Clairol Herbal Essences shampoo ads and bath soaps.
Between 2001 and 2007, Westheimer made regular appearances on PBS Television's Between the Lions as "Dr. Ruth Wordheimer" in the parody of her therapist role, where she helped anxious readers and spellers over fear long words. In January 2009, the 55th anniversary edition of Playboy magazine included Westheimer as # 13 on the list of 55 most important people in sex since the last 55 years. In October 2013, drama, Being a Dr. Ruth opens Off Broadway. Actress Debra Jo Rupp plays the role of Dr. Ruth. The drama features the life of a sex therapist from escaping Nazis in Kindertransport and joins the Haganah in Jerusalem as a talent scout and sniper, for his struggle for success as a single mother who came to America. Eileen DeSandre plays Dr. Ruth in the Virginia Repertory Theater production of Being Dr. Ruth .
Westheimer has delivered opening remarks at the Hebrew Union College seminary, Lehman College from City University of New York, and, in 2004, at Trinity College, where he has been awarded honorary degrees. He also taught courses and seminars at Princeton and Yale, and was a guest speaker at the Bronx High School of Science in New York in commemoration of Yom HaShoah 2008. Westheimer talked about his life story and the audience of 500 singing "Happy Birthday" in honor of the anniversary to -80. At the ceremony he received the Bronx High School of Science diploma. In 2002, he received the Leo Baeck Medal for his humanitarian work that promotes tolerance and social justice.
