Radford University is a co-educational public university located in Radford, Virginia. It is one of eight state universities that award a doctorate. Founded in 1910, Radford offers curriculum for undergraduate in more than 100 fields, postgraduate programs including M.F.A., M.B.A., M.A., M.S., Ed.S., Psy.D., M.S.W., and a specialized doctoral program in health-related professions.

Histori

The Normal Country and the Industrial School for Women at Radford was founded in Radford as a women's college in 1910. In 1924, the school changed its name to Master's State College in Radford , with the primary intent of training teachers in the Appalachian region. In 1943, as part of the country's consolidation movement, the college joined the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and the State University in adjacent Blacksburg, serving as a larger university women's campus. The merger was disbanded in 1964, and after a period of sustained and significant growth, Radford College was granted university status in 1979. In 2008, the Virginia General Assembly passed three doctoral programs at Radford University, and the first doctorate awarded in 2011.

Academics

The Radford University degree program emphasizes the liberal arts, business, science, and teacher education. The undergraduate and graduate programs in business administration offered by the College of Business and Economics at Radford University are accredited by the Association for Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

The university has an 18: 1 student/faculty ratio with an average class size of 31.

More than 80 percent of faculty members have doctoral degrees or other terminal degrees (M.F.A., M.B.A., Ph.D., J.D., etc.) in the field. Undergraduate and graduate academies

The university is organized into six undergraduate colleges and a postgraduate college, the College of Graduate Studies and Research. Undergraduate colleges are:

  • Waldron College of Health and Human Services
  • Artist Academy of Science and Technology
  • Academy of Visual Arts and Performing

Within colleges, some fields are defined as "schools", such as the School of Nursing and the School of Social Work (at the School of Health and Human Services) and the School of Communication (in the College of Humanities & Behavioral Sciences). The latter brings together former departments of media studies (journalism, broadcasting, web design, and advertising) and communications (speech-language pathology and public relations).

The College of Graduate Studies and Research offers 18 degree programs in areas such as arts, business, communications, counseling, criminal justice, education, English, music, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychology, and social work. The Council for Higher Education for Virginia has authorized three doctoral programs at Radford in counseling psychology, physical therapy and nursing practice. The Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) program in Psychology Counseling recognized its first student in the fall of 2008. Doctorate in a physical therapy program began in the summer of 2009. First nursing practice students began studying in online courses in the fall of 2010.

Campus and community

Radford University is a 204 acre (0.83 km km) campus located in the residential area of ​​Radford, Virginia. It is located in the Highlands of Virginia, between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains on a double bend in the New River. Almost all of 31 administrative, academic, student services, and dormitories, many built in Georgian-style red brick, are located in three quadrangles and a pedestrian street in a 76-acre (310,000 m 2 ) area, while Large adjoining areas along the New River have university athletic facilities, student parking lots, and student apartments. Student life

Approximately 3,150 Radford students live on campus in 15 dormitories.

Radford University has over 270 clubs and student organizations. Some of them are the Student Government Association, various academic fraternities, clubs, and societies in several academic fields, Radford Pitches A'capella, Yes & amp; Improv Club, Outdoor RU, intramural sports club, Model United Nations Club, and more.

Radford University has a variety of student media organizations, such as The Tartan (student-run newspaper), Radio Free Radford, The Beehive (yearbook/magazine), Exit 109 (literary magazine), ROC-TV, alias "Radford On Camera" (student-TV station), and SMADS (student media advertising).

Athletics

The university team is known as the Highlanders (in honor of Scottish-Scottish heritage in the region) and competes in the Big South Conference. Radford offers 16 NCAA varsity sports for men and women. Radford's men's basketball team won the Big South Conference tournaments in 1998, 2009 and 2018. Radford also won the Men's Big South Conference Tennis Championships in 2007, 2008 and 2009 and the Great Southern Softball Championship in 2009.

The Radford Baseball Team has won the South Conference Great Championships in 2015, and 2017. By 2015, they beat the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina with a single walk-off by Hunter Higgerson. The team finished with a final note of 45-16. The team was chosen to compete in the Nashville Region where they went 2-2, with victory against Lipscomb University and Indiana University, before losing to National Vanderbilt University Runner-up 2015, at the Regional Finals.

Rugby men's club team Radford won the Second Division National Championships in 2003 and 2008.

Student athletes have exclusive use of the Dedmon Center, recreation complex and meeting that opened in 1981. The Dedmon Center has a 1/6-mile indoor jogging track, weight training room, locker room and some team rooms. The main arena features basketball floors and a secondary arena for inter-college competition with four recreational fields for basketball or volleyball. Contiguous facilities include intramural football, soccer, softball field, and intermediate courts and courts for baseball, softball, field hockey, and tennis. The Patrick D. Cupp stadium adds inter-university football, lacrosse, and track and field complexes.

Administration

Radford University's current president is Brian Hemphill, who has served in that role since July 2016. The university administration is overseen by a 15-member board, whose members are appointed by the Commonwealth Governor and serve a four-year term. Each year, the Council also elects a student and faculty member to serve as a counselor representative on the Board.
