The Feldenkrais Method is a type of exercise therapy designed by Moshà ©  © Feldenkrais (1904-1984). This method is claimed to be able to rearrange the relationship between the brain and body and thereby improve body movement and psychological state.

There is no good medical evidence that the Feldenkrais method provides any health benefits, and it is not known whether it is safe or cost-effective, although it is difficult to understand the serious risks.

Effectiveness and acceptance

In 2015, the Australian Government Health Department publishes a review of alternative therapies that seek to determine if any are eligible for health insurance coverage; The Feldenkrais method is one of 17 evaluated therapies that have not found any clear effective evidence. Thus in 2017 the Australian government named the Feldenkrais Method as a practice that is not eligible for insurance subsidies, saying it will "ensure that taxpayers' funds are issued appropriately and not directed to untestable therapies".

It is not known whether the Feldenkrais method is safe or cost-effective, although according to Ernst and Singh's review of alternative medicine "there is no serious risk imaginable".

David Gorski has written that this method has a resemblance to the healing of faith, such as "glorified yoga" and that it is "bordering on shamanism".

Description

The Feldenkrais method is a type of alternative exercise therapy which, according to advocates, can improve the disruption of connections between the motor and body cortex, thus benefiting the quality of body movement and improving well-being. Feldenkrais Guild of North America claims that the Feldenkrais method allows people to "rediscover their innate capacity for graceful and efficient movement" and that "These improvements will often generalize to improve function in other aspects of their life". In a session, a Feldenkrais practitioner directs attention to a pattern of habitual movement that is considered inefficient or tense, and tries to teach a new pattern using gentle, slow, and repetitive movements. Slow repetition is believed to be necessary to inculcate new habits and enable it to start feeling normal. These movements may be passive (performed by the practitioner at the receiving body) or active (performed by the recipient). The receiver is fully dressed.

History

Similar to several other somatic methods, such as those initiated by F. Matthias Alexander, Elsa Gindler, and Gerda Alexander, the Feldenkrais Method derives from the efforts of its founder to work with his own body problems. In the case of Moshà ©  © Feldenkrais, it is a chronically wounded knee.

Feldenkrais first injured his knee while playing football in a British-controlled Palestine in the 1920s. Having served as head of electronic engineering for the Israeli Army in Israel from 1951 to 1953, Feldenkrais devoted the rest of his life, from the age of the next 50 years, to developing and teaching self-awareness through movement lessons.

From 1950 until his death in 1984, he taught continuously in his hometown of Tel Aviv. Feldenkrais earned partial recognition through media accounts of his work with prominent people, including Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion. Beginning in the late 1950s, Feldenkrais traveled to teach in Europe and America. Several hundred people became certified Feldenkrais practitioners through training held in San Francisco from 1975 to 1978 and in Amherst, Massachusetts from 1980 to 1984. Anticipating the need for institutional structures to continue his teaching he helped found the Feldenkrais Guild of North America in 1977.

Feldenkrais developed a conceptual framework of his method in part through the publication of six books, beginning with Body and Adult Behavior (1949) and ending with posthumous publication The Potent Self (1985).

Since Feldenkrais's death, the international Feldenkrais community has used union structures to organize its activities, with training accreditation boards in America, Europe and Australasia overseeing guilds and associations in eighteen member states. The Feldenkrais Journal , Feldenkrais Guild of North America's annual publication, serves as a forum for the Feldenkrais community to discuss its methods and applications.

Influences

The development of the Feldenkrais Method was influenced by Moshe Feldenkrais's involvement in martial arts. After meeting Kano Jigoro, founder of Judo, while living in Paris in the 1930s, Feldenkrais turned to the practice. One of the main influences of judo on the Feldenkrais Method is the difference between rote training and attentive movements: "the method of physical exercise in fashion... simply exerting muscles with no other purpose, and one requiring much willingness to bind oneself unbroken to one of these methods, "wrote Feldenkrais in 1952." Judo is very different, every movement has a special purpose attained after proper and flexible execution. Feldenkrais was born into Hasidic's family and community, and he recognized the influence of Hasidic Judaism on his method. In his 2007 book Making the Connection: Roots and Resonance in the Life of Moshe Feldenkrais , David Kaetz argues that there are many lines of influence to be found between the pattern of Feldenkrais Judaism and the Feldenkrais Method - for example, the use of paradox as a pedagogical tool. Feldenkrais also recognized the influence of Russian spiritualist George Gurdjieff on his work, particularly Gurdjieff's teachings on automatism and freedom in manifestation.

Feldenkrais earned his doctorate in a program at the Sorbonne intended to bridge theoretical physics and industrial engineering.
