Chest physiotherapy ( CPT ) is a treatment commonly performed by physical therapists and respiratory therapists, in which respiration is enhanced by the indirect removal of mucus from the patient's respiratory tract. Another term, used in Australia, includes respiratory physiotherapy or cardiothorax.

Techniques include a tap or percussion: the therapist gently claps the chest, back, and area under the patient's arm. Percussion, although effective in the care of infants and children, is no longer used in Australia in adults because of the introduction of more effective treatments and focused self-management. This includes, but is not limited to, the use of "flutter" or oscillatory positive pressure device, PEP mask or device (positive expiratory pressure) as well as special exercise regime. The prescribed exercise may include specific respiratory exercises, such as autogenic drainage, as well as general cardiovascular exercises that help the body to release sputum and increase the efficiency of oxygen uptake in muscles.

The utility of chest physiotherapy in pneumonia has not been determined.
