Therapy? is an alternative metal band from Northern Ireland. The band was formed in 1989 by Andy Cairns guitarist from Ballyclare and drummer-vocalist Fyfe Ewing from Larne, Northern Ireland. The band initially recorded their first demo by filling out Cairns on a bass guitar. To complete the lineup, the band recruited Larne Michael McKeegan's bassist. The band signed a contract with a large A & amp; M Records in 1992, for whom they released four albums, most notably Troublegum in 1994 and Infernal Love in 1995. Ewing's departure in early 1996 preceded the arrival of his successors Graham Hopkins and Martin McCarrick on cellos and guitars. Neil Cooper replaced Hopkins on drums in 2002. After McCarrick's departure in 2004, the band has remained a stable three parts ever since.
Therapy? is currently signed to the independent British label Marshall Records. The band has released 12 full-length studio albums and has sold over two million albums worldwide

While attending a charity show at Jordanstown Polytechnic in early 1989, Andy Cairns saw Fyfe Ewing playing drums in the band's punk band. The two spoke afterwards and agreed to meet for a rehearsal at Fyfe's house in Larne with Andy playing a small exercise tool and Fyfe playing his tools with a brush. In summer they recorded four demo tape songs with Andy playing bass guitar borrowed from Fyfe's classmate Michael McKeegan. Deciding to play directly, they recruited McKeegan and played their debut show at Belfast Art College supporting Decadence Within on August 20, 1989. They followed it with a recording of four other songs ( Meat Abstract ). Their voices became heavily influenced by indie rock artists such as The Jesus Lizard, Big Black, and The Membrane and new disco beat actions like Belgian Erotic Dissidents.
Therapy? released their first single, titled Meat Abstract in July 1990. The single was limited to 1000 copies, and was released on its own band Multifuckinational Records. During the summer of that year, the band toured first through the United Kingdom with The Beyond, catching the attention of influential DJ John Peel along the way. The band's early years followed a well-known pattern of hard graft on the local alternative music scene, with Cairns often spending a full day at the Michelin tire factory (where he worked as a quality controller), then drove across Northern Ireland to make for the show. The band also took whatever support slots they could, opening for the likes of Loop, Ride, Teenage Fanclub, Inspiral Carpets, Tad, Fugazi and Ned's Atomic Dustbin. Therapy? quickly became the attention of local music fans with their unique style without compromise. The use of guitar feeds as the "fourth instrument" and unconventional song structure, combined with the original dark approach to the lyrics and imaginative use of samples drawn from cult films and unclear documentaries, made them seen in 1990 by independent label based in London. Wiiija Notes . The move was aided by Lesley Rankine of Silverfish, who passed the band's first single to Gary Walker of Wiiija.
The band's first album, July 1991 Babyteeth , and January 1992 followed up, Pleasure Death , were successful enough to get the band's major label deal with A & amp; M Records. Both albums were successful underground, reaching number 1 on the UK Indies Stairs. That concern led to slot support with Babes In Toyland and Hole on their individual UK tours. A compilation of two albums titled Caucasian Psychosis was prepared for the North American market, and the band embarked on their first US tour in October 1992.
Initial A & amp; Their M, Nurse , entered the Top 40 UK Album List in November 1992, while the main single "Teethgrinder" became the band's first top 40 in the UK and Ireland. The grunge revolution is in full swing, with US clothing Nirvana leading the way. Predictably, the media began to draw comparisons between the two bands. Heavy guitars and inventive drums are rapidly becoming Therapeutic trademarks, bringing them further toward grunge camps than far from it.
Success (1993-1995)
If there is one true year of "breakthrough" in band history, it will almost certainly happen in 1993. The release of Shortsharpshock EP catapults Therapy? to the Top 40, peaking at nine, featuring the main song Screamager . The single caused the first of several appearances in the British Top of the Pops music show. Two more Top 40 English EPs Face the Strange and Opal Mantra followed, when the band toured heavily on the European festival circuit, making two separate marches to the United States to support Kings X originally, and then both Helm and The Jesus Lizard, and played their debut show in Japan. Compilations of three EPs were released in the US and Japan ( Hats Off to the Insane ), and in Europe ( Born in Accidents ).
1994 saw the release of a commercially successful commercial album of Troublegum in February which resulted in band performances in a series of rock and indie festivals, including Reading (third consecutive performance), Donington and Phoenix in the UK alone, as well as a clutch of Top 40 singles. It achieved a series of nominations in the year-end polls, including a Mercury Music Prize nomination, and success at Kerrang! Appreciation.
With impatience installing for the new album, Love Infernal was released in June 1995. This time, the press reaction was lukewarm. The band has attempted to make "cinematic" notes with Belfast DJ David Holmes used to connect every song with "madness", but in the eyes of many, has produced separate pieces of over-subscription with ballads. Despite Donington's second successive sequence at the request of Metallica, and the singles of Stories and Loose in the UK at the beginning of the year, it is clear that Therapy? has changed direction. Although the single-laden string Diane (originally by HÃÆ'¼sker DÃÆ'¼ ) is the top 10 hit in 15 European countries by the end of the year, much of the initial momentum has gone. Fyfe Ewing left the band in January 1996. The band quickly recruited Graham Hopkins to replace Ewing as well as the permanent addition of cellist Martin McCarrick, and continued touring throughout the US and Canada in 1996.
After the tour ended in October 1996, Therapy? finally needed a long break. They reconvened after a few months and spent most of the writing of 1997, practicing and recording follow-up for Infernal Love .
While the single Church of Noise in March 1998 failed commercially, it marked the band's return after three years out of the spotlight. Semi-Detached albums surpassed Troublegum and Love Infernal paths with their dark ambience. However, the promotion for this album is less than optimal, due to issues with label A & amp; M, which culminated in the loss of their recording contract with the company. Without label support, Cairns and McKeegan needed to finance the band's European tour at the end of 1998 alone.
Substitution of the millennium (1999-2003)
The band's sentiment towards the newer alternative metal bands is expressed in the song Ten Years of Plan of the 1999 band Ark21's Suicide Pact-You First composed album, packed full of vitriol, unsatisfactoriness and musical aggression. The album reveals a more complete sound, but feels lacking in songs suitable for mainstream radio broadcasts.
The following year saw the release of the album So Much For The Ten Year-A Retrospective 1990-2000 which (at least the title) was a self-deprecating snob on the band's difficulty with corporate rock. in recent years. It also allows the band to meet some outstanding obligations for Universal Music.
Therapy? recorded a follow-up note Shameless in early 2001 in Seattle. The album, produced by legendary Jack Endino, was postponed release by record company Ark21 through September. Graham Hopkins, who was unhappy with his musical limitations in the band, quit in December 2001. After Hopkins's departure, the band again found themselves without drummer and record contracts.
The band toured Europe in 2002 with ex-3 Red Color drummer Keith Baxter. Hopkins replaced permanently in Therapy? by ex-The Beyond/Cable/drummer Gorilla Neil Cooper, while the band signed a new recording contract with Spitfire Records.
This line-up lasted one album, tending to commercial High Anxiety . Their first home video release, a DVD titled Scopophobia was released shortly afterwards, comprising a full live concert at Belfast's Mandella Hall in June 2003, promo videos and other extras. The band completed a UK tour in late 2003 as a three-part, as McCarrick left the tour mid-way due to a perforated eardrum.
Back to the three sections (2004-2009)
McCarrick left the band permanently in March 2004, and the band has now become the three permanent parts again for the first time since 1995. On September 19th, 2006, Therapy? performing an exclusive studio performance of a song chosen by fans who have selected three of their favorite songs from the long list on the band's website. This voice is counted and twelve songs with the most votes are then performed and recorded (both as audio and video). In early 2007, the track became available for purchase from the band's official website. Webgig is no longer available for purchase. In addition to this release, the band got the attention of their old record company Universal Records (which has rights to band material recorded on A & M Records) which released both old promo DVD clips ( Gold ) and BBC's double-CD compilation session (Music Through Cheap Transistors) in 2007. On the front, Therapy? focusing on markets they normally do not play, including slots at the NXNE festival in Canada, the festival dates in Europe (one of them as a late replacement for the Helm at the Nova Rock Festival) and touring through countries such as Romania, Croatia and Serbia, even playing two performances on Reunion Island, off the coast of East Africa. The band ended in 2007 by supporting the New Model Army at their Christmas performances in Cologne.
Therapy? was a last minute replacement for Biffy Clyro on the JÃÆ'¤germeister Rock League tour of Germany which lasted five dates in February 2008. This date was the only show played in 2008 as the band focused their energy exclusively on record new recordings. Therapy? began recording a new album at the end of July at Blast Studios in Newcastle and finished recording in late August. It's produced by Andy Gill. A workout video appears on the Therapeutic website that offers a preview of a new work, featuring a direction influenced by rhythmic music ( Rehearsal ), in addition to the typical rough trajectory of the newer Therapy? output ( Clowns Galore ). Album entitled Crooked Timber , was released on March 23, 2009 via Blast Records / Global Music . The band performed a whole new album on selected live dates in May, playing various European festivals throughout the summer (including debut performances at Oxegen in Ireland and a second show in the UK's Download) and an extensive European tour from October to December.
Twentieth_anniversary_.282010_.E2.80.93_2013.29 "> Twentieth Warning (2010 - 2013)
To mark the 20th anniversary of the release of their debut commercial recording, Therapy? was performed for three consecutive nights at London's Monto Water Rats in March recorded for the band's first official live album titled We Here To The End , released in November. The lavish gold edition of the 2009 album Crooked Timber was released on July 19th. Therapy? also appeared at European festivals in the summer, including at Knebworth Sonisphere on July 31 when the band performed the album Troublegum as a whole. Then in 2010, the band performed several sets of "Troublegum & amp; more" throughout Europe as part of their 20th anniversary celebrations.
In December 2010, the band began recording their thirteenth studio album, titled A Brief Crack of Light , at Newcastle's Blast Studio. The album recording was completed in February 2011 and mixing began in March. At the end of May 2011, the group announced a change of plans for the new album; another recording session is planned for June to record new songs that appear. The songs were mixed in July 2011 and included, along with songs from the first session, for the new album. The album was released in February 2012. An earlier single and video entitled Living in the Shadow of the Terrible Thing was released in January 2012.
In May 2013, Cairns embarked on its first solo acoustic tour in the UK, as well as several shows in Europe. In particular marking the tour, he released a CD of acoustic material for sale exclusively at shows, consisting of 12 Therapies? songs, 6 original songs just written for the tour and cover version, all recorded at the end of April at Blast Studios in Newcastle
The Gemil Box was released on November 18, 2013; a box set that includes a career of rare and unreleased material. Content includes remastered versions of Nurse , Troublegum , Infernal Love and Semi-Detached , 3 rare CDs yet ever released track, a DVD of the band's 2010 appearance on Sonisphere from the album Troublegum, the official bootleg from London ULU '91 and London Mean Fiddler '92, a 12th vinyl "from the release of their initial demos and cassettes from the recording right from Dublin 1990.
The Deluxe Edition release of both Troublegum and Infernal Love was released by Universal Music on March 31, 2014. The band is promoting this release with a series of videos and audio uploaded to their official YouTube Channels, went on a brief tour in the UK in early April. The single compilation from 1992 to 1998 was followed on April 14, 2014 through Spectrum Records , a subsidiary of Universal Music, entitled Stories: The Singles Collection .
Disquiet & amp; Acoustic Event (2014 - 2017)
On February 18, 2014, the band began pre-production on studio album number 14 with producer Tom Dalgety in their present-day neighborhood of Blast Studios in Newcastle. The session was completed on 28 February with 18 songs set in demo form. After selecting 11 songs, the band began recording the album right on April 17, 2014 and finished on April 30, 2014. The album, titled Disquiet , was released on the band's new record label on March 23rd. 2015. Pre-order of the album was announced on February 23, 2015 and included the instant download of two exclusive tracks and an exclusive pre-order song called We Kill People . The only digital single called Still Hurts , featuring two other non-album tracks, was released on March 9, 2015.
The band started the first leg of their Disquiet Tour in England in March, before taking in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, and returned to England throughout April. Their performance in Utrecht was filmed by 'Quantum VR Media' for future VR 360 releases. In early May, Therapy? recording sessions for XFM, their 4th overall following the previous session in 2001, 2004 and 2012. Deathstimate was released as the only download on October 30, 2015. Single Tides was released on April 15, 2016, though available in early March to purchase a limited edition CD on UK tour bands that did the Infernal Love album overall. Summer festivals on European circuits followed, including dates at Wacken Open Air in Germany. Therapy? toured entirely acoustic "Wood & ampas" through Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Germany and the UK from November 14 to December 1, 2016. The newly recorded 11 acoustic acoustic album titled Wood & amp; Wire available for purchase on CD at these events. Six years Irish Wood & amp; Wire tour takes place in April 2017.
On July 21, 2017 the band announced a double acoustic album, Communion: Live in the Union Chapel , for release on August 21, 2017. The album was recorded in London on December 1, 2016 during "Wood & amp"; Wire "tour of Europe.
On January 15, 2018 the band began recording their 15th studio album at Blast Recording in Newcastle with producer Chris Sheldon. The recording finished on February 6, 2018. In March, the band completed a 22 date tour of England and Ireland in support of The Stranglers.
On May 10, 2018, the band announced through their social media that they signed record contracts worldwide with Marshall Records

Question suffix
Much has been made over the years from the unusual question marks suffix for band names. In the initial interview the band said that the name was "very deep" and meant to ask the question "do you need therapy?" But in 1992 interview guitarist Andy Cairns admitted that it was a design opportunity when he worked on the band's first sleeve record. Working with the transfer Letraset, Cairns misinterpret the band name, and use "?" icon to fill the space to the right. "And then we thought, well maybe we could bluff when people started reading it."

Therapy? collaborate with the short-lived rap group Fatal (part of the Soul Assassin camp, do not be confused with the Fatal hip hop artist) in the song "Come and Die" from the 1993 Judgment Night soundtrack.
