Small Chat is a book written by speech therapist Nicola Lathey and journalist Tracey Blake, who stated the goal is to help improve language and communication skills from birth to four years. The book is 320 pages published in UK and internationally by Pan Macmillan on June 20, 2013. It will be published in the US and Canada by The Experiment in April 2014. The book is intended to provide ways to improve the baby's language and communication skills to help making them "smarter and more sociable".

Nicola Lathey is a Speech Language and Therapist. He qualified from University College London in 1999 and, since then, has worked for the NHS and overseas in Australia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. He is the founder of Owl Center, a private multi-disciplinary clinic for children in Oxfordshire and surrounding counties. Nicola was inspired to become a Speech and Language Therapist after observing the therapy given to her younger brother with Down's Syndrome. Nicola is a member of ASLTIP (Speech and Language Therapist Association in Independent Practice), Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, and Health Professional Council.

Tracey Blake is a journalist and editor. He has worked in the Daily Mail since 2005, and lives in Buckinghamshire with his partner, James, and their children, Minnie and Monty. He is also the author of the popular Baby Blog on the Mail Online website.

Overview

Small Talk is a speech development guide for use from pregnancy to four years of age.

This book contains many practical 'Small Talk Time' techniques - language games intended to be fast and fun to play with babies, toddlers and preschoolers. Small talks were written with the aim of giving parents confidence to improve their child's communication in the early years of great importance when the brain is busy creating the path to the jaw, lips and tongue, building the building blocks of the first speech.

Since its launch in June 2013, the book has received a large amount of media coverage both in the UK and around the world.

The three-page main article on Small Talk is published in the Femail section of the Daily Mail on June 13, 2013 and also repeated in Mail Online. On June 14, Nicola and Tracey were interviewed about the book at BBC Breakfast, and Nicola appeared as a guest on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour on July 26, 2013 to discuss the book and techniques of Small Talk Time.

The Small Talk Time books and techniques set forth therein have been featured in major publications in countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Belgium and Lithuania. Nicola Lathey also appeared on Radio New Zealand on June 28, 2013. The book is also featured on a number of other magazines, websites, newspapers, and radio stations.
