Premise

The series explores the research and relationship between William Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan), two pioneers of human sexuality research at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. The series began in October 1956 and ended in August 1969 with a fourth season.

As noted by Los Angeles Times television critics, the series "hangs on facts"; "It's more useful for viewers to think about it because it's all made, because, for the most part, and because as far as it tells the story of two real people, it also decorates the story with dramatic practicality, creating character and narration." Indeed, in these side streets, give a brief description of the passing character (the patient, the prostitute, the wife of a provost), that the show finds many of its best moments. "

Development and production

Showtime ordered the pilot for the Masters of Sex in August 2011, and asked for the series in June 2012, with the first season consisting of twelve episodes.

Writer/producer Michelle Ashford serves as a pioneer for the Masters of Sex . He gathered staff writing the majority of women, although he said this was not intentional.

Ashford created the character Barton Scully from a combination of several men known to the Master. One is gay, but not a person who served as a provost during the early Master's studies.

Master prop Jeffrey Johnson noted the difficulty of obtaining accurate information about sexual devices over a period of time. "They're very taboo, it's hard to find a research picture, people do not even write it down." He acquired some vibrators and vintage dildo for use in the series along with buying condoms produced in that era (which lacks the tip of a modern condom reservoir). He designed the "Ulysses", a transparent dildo with the camera mounted first seen in the pilot episode, from the start, along with the diaphragm measurement kit seen in the next episode.

Annaleigh Ashford, who had a recurring role in the first season as Betty Dimello, was promoted to the regular series in the second season.

The opening order of credit was created by Elastic design studio. The sequence, which includes metaphors and sex symbols that are pitched, and full of words, receive mixed responses from critics; it is placed on the best and worst list to open credit order. It was also nominated for an Emmy award for Position Title Design.
