Histori

Sejarah awal

King's was originally opened in 1840 at the home of St Clement Danes workers on Portugal Street near Lincoln's Inn Fields and King's College London itself. It is used as a training facility where King's College medical students can practice and receive instruction from the college professor itself. The surrounding area consists of crowded slums characterized by poverty and disease. Within two years of opening, the hospital treated 1,290 inpatients in 120 beds, with two patients sharing a bed unnecessarily. The main contractor for the new hospital is Lucas Brothers. This was one of the first hospitals to start nursing training, in 1856.

Aseptic surgical pioneer Joseph Lister performed his first major elective surgery under strict antiseptic conditions in 1877. He helped to encourage hospitals to have surgical units comparable to the best in Europe.

In the first years of the 20th century, demographic changes saw a decrease in the number of patients requiring care in central London, and the increase in patients from further away - notably Camberwell, Peckham and Brixton subsequent suburbs on the outskirts of London. Following a Parliamentary Act of 1904, a foundation stone was laid for a new hospital, designed by William Pite, in 1909 at its present location on the Danish Hill, south of the River Thames. A move to Denmark Hill provides hospitals with a location near the greenfield to its patients. The building itself incorporates the principle of modern design to encourage adequate ventilation, using electric clocks throughout, containing only the second internal phone installations in the UK at the time, and generating its own power through the use of diesel engines.

The pre-clinical training of medical students remains the responsibility of King's College London, while advanced medical training is being held at the hospital under the newly formed King's College Hospital Medical School. During the World War I period, most hospitals were used for military purposes. A dental school was established in the same place in 1923. During this time most patients were still poor and very susceptible to infectious diseases such as tuberculosis. In 1937, Guthrie's private wing was founded with donations from the Drama Society and Stock Exchange Operations for richer patients to enjoy the less crowded wards. During the Second World War, hospitals were used to treat victims of air strikes, and were fortunate never to experience major direct attacks.

Modern history

After the creation of the National Health Service in 1948, the hospital was granted the status of Teaching Hospital. In 1974, the NHS reorganization saw King as the center for all healthcare management in its catchment area. The hospital medical school was reunited with King's College in 1983 to form the School of Medicine and Dentistry of King's College. The specially built medical education center, Weston Education Center, was built in 1997 and contains a medical library as well as hosting conferences, symposia, and professional training events and contains a public access computer room for students. In 1998 King's College School of Medicine and Dentistry joined Guy's and St. Thomas Hospital's Medical and Dental Schools (UMDS) to form Guy's School of Medicine, King's and St. Thomas, commonly abbreviated as "GKT".

The Golden Jubilee Wing, intended to host a number of outpatient clinics as well as speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy rooms, was obtained through the Private Finance Initiative contract in 2000. The works, carried by the joint venture of Costain and Skanska at a cost of Ã, Â £ 50 million, completed in 2002.

In December 2013 it was announced that the proposed merger with Guy's and St. Thomas' and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trusts has been suspended due to doubts about the Competition Commission's reaction.

The Trust took over the management of Princess Royal University Hospital in October 2013 following the dissolution of the South London Healthcare NHS Trust. During Christmas 2013 8 patients waited trolleys for more than 12 hours to enter, the largest number of trolleys waiting in the UK.
