Intermittent positive pressure breath ( IPPB ) is a respiratory therapy therapy for hypoventilation. Although not a preferred method because of the cost, IPPB is used to expand the lungs, administer aerosol drugs, and in some circumstances provide ventilation to patients.

Indication
IPPB may be indicated for patients at risk of atelectasis and who are unable or unwilling to breathe deeply without assistance. In patients with severe pulmonary hyperinflation, IPPB may decrease dyspnea and discomfort during nebulized therapy.

Contraindications
Most relative contraindications, such as nausea, hemodynamic instability, tracheal fistula, singulation and haemoptysis. Untreated strain pneumothorax is an absolute contraindication.
IMPLEMENTATION
When treating atelectasis -
- Therapy should be volume-oriented
2. The tidal volume (VT) must be measured
3. The purpose of VT should be established
4. Purpose of VT from 10-15mL/kg body weight
5. Pressure can be increased to achieve VT goals if tolerated by the patient.
When treating atelectasis, IPPB is only useful in the treatment of atelectasis if the volume delivered exceeds the volume achieved by the patient's spontaneous effort.
