David F. Levine is a professor of physical therapy, holding the Walter Cline Chair of Excellence in Physical Therapy at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga. Research and publication contributions focus on animal rehabilitation and physical therapy, including canine physical therapy, animal-assisted therapy, gait analysis and motion analysis, modal modalities such as electrical stimulation and therapeutic ultrasound, and clinical infectious disease research.

Dr. Levine received a B.S. in physical therapy from the University of New England in 1986. He continued his education at Boston University where he received a M.S. in Physical Therapy on Orthopedics in 1990. After receiving his M.S., Levine received his PhD from the University of Tennessee in sports science in 1994.

Professional Career
Career History
He started his professional career as a physical therapist in 1986, and continued to practice throughout his professional career. In 1990, he accepted a position at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga as a professor in the department of physical therapy, a position he currently holds. He is actively involved in university upgrading and improvement. He is also an integral member of the University's Research Interest Group on Clinical Communicable Disease Control. These local faculty, student, and partner teams investigate the effectiveness of disease control in a variety of local clinical settings, making the laboratories work for the real world. In addition to teaching at UTC, he has held additional positions at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Tennessee and NC State since 2001 and 2003 respectively. She is currently working with the University of Tennessee Certificate Program in Canine Rehabilitation. Levine has become an integral part in the development of canine rehabilitation and physical therapy.
He was recently involved with the TEDx program. Dr. Levine is an active member on the TED website, engaging in conversations at various TED talks. He is one of the chairmen of the TEDx conference that took place at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga entitled, "Now What?". The TEDx conference takes place on October 25, 2014 on the UTC campus. Twelve speakers presented topics to 100 audiences selected by the selection committee from a group of applicants. The talks are streamed online and also in the auditorium on the UTC campus. Dr. Levine plays an important part in the organization and implementation of UTC's first TEDx event. With advanced leadership Dr. Levine, the TEDxChattanooga organization held their latest event, which took place in February 2016. Both events of 2014 and 2016 were sold out. In September 2017, she participated in a third TEDx event in Chattanooga at Baylor School with TEDxBaylorSchool.
Dr Levine has worked with the DogTV television channel in giving special talks on the interaction of how animals can benefit human health, and has also been featured on the WDEF-TV channel 12 in Chattanooga in an article on animal-assisted therapy.
Dr. Levine is on the editorial board for PeerJ, which is an award-winning biological and medical science journal, as well as Frontiers in Veterinary Science. He is also an associate member of the allied health research unit at the University of Central Lancashire.
He is an international key speaker at the 2015 Connect Physiotherapy Conference hosted by the Australian Physiotherapy Association in Australia.
Work APTA
Dr. Levine is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). He has written home-study courses for the APTA Orthopedic Section - including Gome Biomechanics: Hip and Biomechanics Gait: Knee - and is the principal expert for Basic Sciences for Animal Physicians. He is currently the deputy chair of the Special Interest-Based Practice (EBP SIG) Interest Group, which is placed under the APTA Research Section. EBP SIG has developed a curriculum guide for schools of physical therapy nationwide, available here.
In 2018, he was honored as Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association (FAPTA). This is the highest association membership category, given to members who have "demonstrated an unshakable effort to advance the physical therapy profession for more than 15 years, prior to the time of candidacy."

Dr. Levine has been a writer or coauthor of over 50 research articles in peer reviewed journals, including The American Journal of Veterinary Research, North American Veterinary Clinic: Small Animal Practice, Gait and Posture, Medical and Physical Techniques, The Journal of Athletic Training, and The Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy with more than 40 articles indexed in PubMed. Dr. Levine is an associate editor of the animal surgery and anesthesiology section of the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science. Dr. Levine is also a founding member of the Clinical Infectious Disease Control Unit at UT-Chattanooga and is part of an ongoing and currently ongoing infectious disease research in a clinical setting.
