The University of Mary (abbreviated UMary or just Mary ) is a private, Christian, Catholic and Benedictine university near Bismarck, North Dakota, originally known as Mary College, founded in 1959.
The university is the largest degree institution in Bismarck. It has campuses in Rome and Peru, and also operates academic programs at satellite locations in North Dakota (Fargo, downtown Bismarck, Watford City, Grand Forks), Minnesota, Montana, Kansas, and Arizona. This is supported by Newman's Guide to Selecting a Catholic College. It is recognized as the College of Distinction (2017-2018), the only institution in North Dakota.

History
Since the beginning of Mary's University as Mary College in the late 1950s, it has grown tremendously. Founded in 1959 by the Benedictine Benedictine Benedictine Sisters as a female college, the university became highly co-educated in the 1960s. It achieved university status - became the University of Mary - in 1986.
The University of Mary is the only private Catholic university in North Dakota. It has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 1969. Since its establishment in 1959, university enrollment has grown from 69 to over 3,000. The graduate program has grown from nursing and education to over 65 degrees, from accounting to Catholic studies.
In 1986, the university began offering masters degrees in nursing, management, and education. It has added a master's program in business administration, counseling, occupational therapy, physical therapy, public administration, project management, clinical exercise physiology, Kinesiology, greeting pathology, and bioethics. In 2001, Mary University launched its vision as "American Leadership University." In this role, the university is committed to providing leadership experience for each student. In 2005, a master's degree in physical therapy was replaced by Doctor of Physical Therapy - the university's first doctor. The first 26 candidates in the program received a PhD in 2006.
The University of Mary has expanded options to make education accessible to working adults and to support lifelong learning in the region and beyond. The University of Mary Worldwide (formerly known as the Center for Acceleration and Distance Education) offers accelerated undergraduate and graduate programs for adult learners. Currently, the University of Mary Worldwide has a total of 14 sites in the Upper Midwest and beyond, including the Butler Center in downtown Bismarck, Fargo Center in Fargo, North Dakota, and Billings Center in Billings, Montana. In 2005, Mary University launched several undergraduate and master programs online. Today, students can earn online undergraduate and graduate degrees through UMary Worldwide.
In 2006, UMary started Business School Gary Tharaldson. Named for Gary Tharaldson, a North Dakota hospitality entrepreneur and industry innovator, the new school is designed to bridge the gap between academia and business. The 29,000 square foot facility (2,700 m 2 ) is the place where Gary Tharaldson School opened in September 2008.
From autumn 2009 to Spring 2010, Mary University sought out facilities as a base for the Rome, Italy program. This one finds a ten minute bus ride from the city center. The first students to learn in this Rome program left the United States in the fall of 2010.
The Catholic Study Program, an initiative of Monsignor President James Monsignor P. Shea, was also launched in the fall of 2010. On October 19, 2010, the program was named in honor of Bishop Paul A. Zipfel, the sixth bishop of Bismarck diocese, North Dakota. The Catholic Studies Program is an interdisciplinary program designed to explore the contribution and influence of the Catholic Church on human thought and culture, past and present. This program invites students from every religion who wishes to deepen their knowledge of the rich history and traditions of the Catholic life.
Today, with nearly 300 full-time faculty and staff, Maria University remains committed to continuing its Sisters mission: serving people in the region with a passion for growing servant leadership, preparing leaders in the ministry of truth.

Campus
The University of Mary is a rural campus located about four miles (6 km) south of Bismarck and sits on a hill overlooking the "Capital of the City." The campus includes 24 buildings. Some of the original buildings on campus are designed by architect Marcel Breuer.
Harold Schafer Leadership Center is home to the leadership program offered by the university. The upper floors usually hold conferences and meetings while the downstairs is home to two computer labs.
The Benedictine Center for Servant Leadership is one of the oldest buildings on campus, having previously served as a library and monastery for the sisters. This is primarily the home of the university administration office, including the President's Office, Academic Affairs, Graduate Acceptance, UMAR Worldwide, Public Affairs, Financial Aid, Clerks, Student Accounts, Student Success Centers, Student Development, Careers and Testing Services, M- Business Office. It is also home to the School of Education and Behavioral Sciences, three residence halls (below), and the Hauer Family Theater.
Boniface Hall is a women's residence hall. St. Joseph's Hall for Men is a faith-based male dormitory. St Scholastica's Hall for Women is a faith-based women's dormitory.
The Welder Library was built in 1990 and is named for the university president's emeritus, Sister Thomas Welder. This library stores a number of books and other media. The library building is also home to the Humanities School of Arts and Sciences division.
Greg Butler Hall is a women's residence hall located southeast of the Welder Library. Hillside Hall is a male residence hall located northeast of the Welder Library. An outer track and a baseball field is located east of both halls.
The McDowell Activity Center (MAC) is the centerpiece of the athletic department and includes offices and lockers at lower levels and heavy spaces. The main uses for this center are for men's and women's basketball teams as well as women's volleyball teams. The McDowell Activity Center is located north of Hillside Hall. The Tschider Center for Health Sciences occupies one wing of this building, and provides office space and classrooms for human performance programs.
Lumen Vitae University Center (LVUC) serves as a community meeting room for students and faculty. The campus restaurant, Crow's Nest, offers a 24/7 meal. The Bookstore and Marauders Mart are located near the Crow's Nest.
Harold J. Miller Center is one of the oldest buildings on campus and home of science, mathematics, occupational therapy, and computer labs. The building is connected to the east side of the University Hall. Arno Gustin Hall includes the main auditorium for campus The Clairmont Center has a music department as well as several classrooms, Campus Ministry, and Heskett Hall, which is a small show stage and home to several lecture classes. Casey Center for Nursing Home Education nursing and physical therapy department. In addition, the information desk is located here as well as the lounge to the east of the information area. Tennis courts are accessible just outside the northern end of this section of the building. In addition, there is an exercise field for soccer, softball ball, football, tracks & amp; field, and baseball on campus.
Deichert and Boyle Halls are student apartments located on the north end of campus. Right outside Deichert Hall, on the northernmost side of the campus, lies "The Cloisters." The Cloisters are available only for upper and post graduate students. The Cloisters consists of three buildings, two apartment-style suites and a student/campus pub. Both apartments are named after the heritage sites of Benedictine Subiaco (female) and Monte Cassino (male). College student commons/pubs named "Chesterton's," in honor of the famous Christian essay of the 20th century, G.K. Chesterton.
Athletics
The University of Mary is a member of the NCAA Division II and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The color of the Mary Marauders University team is blue and orange. Robber team in 17 sports, including soccer, basketball, swimming, football, indoor tracks and tracks, outdoor tracks and tracks, cross country, volleyball, baseball, softball, wrestling and tennis.
