The terminal title is a university degree that can indicate one of two results. In some cases, it is the highest degree that can be awarded in a particular academic or professional path. In other cases, it is a degree awarded when a candidate completes a number of courses but does not go to doctoral work. Some students enroll in the Master terminal program with the aim of preparing to enter a PhD program. For certain professions and research, it means the lowest degree is considered qualified.
The academic (or research) doctorate obtained as a PhD is considered a terminal degree in most academic fields of study in the United States. However, professional doctoral degrees may be regarded as terminal titles in professional degree pathways, although they are a prerequisite for a research degree. The phrase "terminal degree" is widely used in the United States, but is rarely used outside the country. This term is generally not used in the UK or Canada, for example, and its precise meaning varies between the areas and the disciplines in which the term is used. In some countries there are more advanced degrees than PhDs, such as higher doctorates in the UK and Russia, and a habilitation degree given in Germany.
Not all terminal titles are doctoral. For example, in the field of professional practice there are often master-level terminals such as MEng (Master of Engineering), MLArch and MArch standing for Master Landscape Architect and Master Architect or even degree degrees like BArch which stands for Bachelor of Architecture or BEng for Engineers , MB (Bachelor of Medicine - UK). Interior design and Interior Architecture has master-level terminal levels such as MID, MA, MS Interior design education. Most non-doctoral degrees are not terminal in academic terms, with the exception of the Master of Fine Arts (MFA). The MFA is an academically recognized terminal title and is awarded to practitioners in fine arts and performing arts. The MBA, and MAT are also considered professional terminal titles.

In the academic field, a typical terminal degree is a Doctor of Philosophy, though others also exist. Ph.D. first phase consists of courses in the subject areas of students and requires one to three years to complete. This is often followed by a preliminary or comprehensive examination and/or a series of cumulative examinations, where the emphasis is on the width rather than the depth of knowledge. Finally, two to four years is usually required for a substantial and original contribution composition to human knowledge embodied in a written dissertation that in the social sciences and humanities is typically 250-450 pages in length. The dissertation generally consists of (i) a comprehensive literature review, (ii) an outline of the methodology, and (iii) some chapters of scientific, social, historical, philosophical, or literary analysis. Usually, upon completion, the candidate undergoes an oral test, sometimes publicly, by his supervisory committee with expertise in the given discipline.
