Raymond Rocco Monto, M.D. (born November 20, 1960) is a certified orthopedic surgeon with practice in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Monto's work includes developments in sports medicine, tennis elbow surgery, hip arthroscopy, platelet-rich plasma, and innovative orthobiology treatments for chronic disorders including Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis. Monto often teaches in the United States and around the world.

Raymond Rocco Monto was born in Ironbound, New Jersey. He played inter-college football at Haverford College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1982. He was the captain of the football team and was an NSCAA All American selection in 1981. Monto graduated magna cum laude with the Department of Higher Honor in Biology from Haverford College with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Society in 1981. Monto earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree at the Faculty of Medicine, University of New York in 1986. During medical school he was a stellar goalkeeper in the first division of Cosmopolitan Soccer League, achieving a national championship US Final Four in 1983 with Union Lancers. He completed an orthopedic surgical residency at Duke University in 1992, and a fellow at Steadman Hawkins Clinic in reconstruction of his knees and shoulders.

Careers and awards

Dr. Monto began his career in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania, before embarking on the first orthopedic surgery and practice of sports medicine at Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts in 1996. After treating a large number of metatarsal foot fractures on the island, he became known for diagnosing a Vineyard fracture. In a controversial move in 2013, he moved his practice to Nantucket, a media spokesperson and associate of the American Orthopedic Orthopedic Academy Monto has won several awards, including the Jacques Duparc 2012 research award from the European Federation of National Orthopedic and Traumatology Associations for his work at tennis elegance, Final Research Award of the European Hip Society 2014; Smith-Nephew Resident Scholar Award, Piedmont Orthopedic Research Award from Duke University, Smith & Nephew Orthopedic Resident Scholar Award, and Magill Rhoads Scholar Award from Haverford College Monto has lectured widespread throughout the United States and Europe, providing over 100 presentations and demonstrating orthopedic innovations including the use of rich platelet plasma and the latest total knee arthroplasty technique.Subo serves as a consultant reviewer for many international orthopedic journals including the Journal of Bone and Joint Surg ery, Bone and Joint Research, and Arthroscopy. He is the premier team doctor for United Soccer and has been a sports medicine consultant for the United States Ski Team, Boston Ballet and Real Madrid CF, and has served in many capacities for Nantucket Cottage Hospital including the president of medical staff, chief of operations, physical and sports medicine, and board members of the hospital.
