Rapid responders ( PRC ), also known as the medical emergency team ( MET ) and the response team high sharpness ( HART ), is a health care provider team that responds to inpatients with early signs of damage to non-intensive care units to prevent breathing or heart attacks. Health care providers are trained in early resuscitation and life support interventions and may include doctors, nurses, or respiratory therapists. The PRC, the medical emergency team (MET), the critical care outreach team (CCOT), and the cruise team are all different forms of components coming out of the rapid response system. The team responds to a call placed by a doctor or family beside the bed that has detected deterioration. Some teams may also provide care during inter-hospital transportation, acting as a critical care transport team.

Effectiveness

Rapid response teams appear to reduce respiratory rate and heart attacks outside the intensive care unit. They also appear to reduce the likelihood of death in hospital. The overall effectiveness of the PRC is somewhat controversial due to variability throughout the study.
