Harriet Claire Wadeson Ph.D., LCSW, ATR-BC, HLM (January 9, 1931 - January 26, 2016) is a pioneer in the arts therapy profession, as well as capable writers, researchers and educators, and directed the Postgraduate Program of Art Therapy at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Art Certificate Program Certificate at Northwestern University where he taught until his death. She is the author of 8 books on art therapy and more than 70 articles in professional journals. He is an international guest lecturer, and educator who has presented papers, led professional delegations, and held workshops in 14 countries throughout Europe and Asia.

Wadeson is a Living Honor Member (HLM) of the American Art Therapy Association, the highest profession award, and won many awards, including the first prize for art from the Smithsonian Institution, Distinguished Faculty award from Northwestern University, the first prize for research from the American Art Therapy Association, Benjamin Rush Bronze Medal Award from the American Psychiatric Association, and Award Resolution from the Illinois Legislature. In addition to holding multiple offices at the American Art Therapy Association Executive Board, he has been an Associate Editor of Art Therapy, Journal of the American Art Therapy Association.

Education, Training and Careers

Wadeson graduated from Cornell University where he studied psychology. He began taking courses at the Washington School of Psychiatry, American University and Catholic University when he met Hanna Kwiatkowska who opened his eyes to the world of art therapy. Kwiatkowska derives family art therapy and offers to train Wadeson at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). At this time, there is no master degree program in art therapy. Wadeson began work at NIMH in 1961 by performing art therapy with adolescent groups. His first publication was about this experience. For eight years, Wadeson worked with patients with affective disorders, including mania, psychotic depression, and suicidal risk. During this time, Wadeson was the only female and non-MD in the project research team. She won the Benjamin Rush Award for Scientific Exhibition from the American Psychiatric Association for her exhibition, "Portraits of Suicide." Furthermore, he works with people suffering from schizophrenia and does not receive medication. After spending thirteen years at NIMH, Wadeson has published twenty-nine articles, mainly in psychiatric journals.

Wadeson began his master's degree in psychology and art therapy from Goddard College. He then pursued the Masters of Social Work (MSW) at Catholic University. He was able to graduate within a year of the Catholic University because of the great publicity. While at NIMH, he teaches art therapy at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences and at Montgomery Community College.

Wadeson left NIMH, expanded his personal practice, and began work on his Ph.D. at Union Institute. His dissertation, "Art Psychotherapy," was one of the first books on the ground, and has now sold 24,000 copies.

In 1978, Wadeson began teaching at the University of Houston, where he became director of the Graduate Program of Art Therapy. In 1980, he was recruited by the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). where he directed the Postgraduate Program of Art Therapy for 23 years. One of Wadeson's greatest contributions at the University of Illinois at Chicago is the "Annual Summer Institute", held at Lake Geneva, WI. This program continues for 20 years. Wadeson developed and is currently directing an art therapy program at Northwestern University.

American Art Therapy Association

Wadeson holds various positions at the American Art Therapy Association (AATA), including Chairman of Publications, Bulletin Editor, Research Chair, Honors Chair, Ethics Chair, and Female Chair Status, among others, and has been Associate Editor of Art Therapy Journal of the American Art Therapy Association. Wadeson was awarded the highest award of the art therapy profession in 1992, Honorary Life Membership (HLM) of the American Art Therapy Association.

Approach

Wadeson is known for his eclectic approach to art therapy. He believes that it is important for art therapists to have a comprehensive knowledge of various human developments and sociological theories to be most effective at working in diverse backgrounds. He stated that the eclectic approach allows the therapist to be open to possibility and to use methods that best suit the client, group, and individual community.
Although, he is eclectic he also describes himself as human, existential, and phenomenological. Nevertheless, he believes that it is important for art therapists to develop their own approach based on their life experiences.

Wadeson is giving presentations, workshops, and book signings across the United States and in Europe, to his recent abandonment, in connection with his latest book, "Cancer Journals in Words and Pictures, Caught in Crab Claws," and an emphasis on the use of creative self-expression in the face of the challenges of living with cancer In addition to 8 books, he has published 70 papers in reference journals and many chapters in the psychology and texts of art therapy.
