Des Moines University is an osteopathic medical school in Des Moines, Iowa. Des Moines University is the second oldest osteopathic medical school and the 15th largest medical school in the United States. There are 14,124 total alumni (10,514 people).

The university is accredited by the American Osteopathic Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) and by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Colleges of Colleges and Schools.

History

Des Moines University was founded in 1898 as Dr. S.S. Still College and Infirmary of Osteopathy & amp; Operation. It renamed Still College in 1905 and Des Moines Still College of Osteopathy and Surgery during the 1940s.

In 1958, the institution was renamed the Osteopathic and Surgical Medicine College. The first satellite clinic was founded in 1963. In 1971, Dietz Diagnostic Center, then a specialized clinic, began operating as a major outpatient facility. In 1980, the University was renamed the Osteopathic Medical University and Health Sciences with an expanded education mission. The School moved to its present place in 1972. The School of Medicine and Podiatric Surgery and College of Biological Sciences (now the College of Health Sciences) was established by the College Board of Supervisors in 1980 and is now part of the university's osteopathic treatment, along with the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery.

The College of Health Sciences established a physician assistant program in 1981 and a physical therapy program in 1988.

The college adopted the name Des Moines University on September 18, 1999. On 15 August 2003, former Iowa Governor Terry E. Branstad became university president. On October 16, 2009, Branstad announced his resignation as President of Des Moines University to pursue running again for the Governor of Iowa; Steve Dengle was elected interim president. In 2005, the university opened a $ 24 million Student Education Center, with a medical library, a new classroom, a coffee shop and a sports center with a basketball court.

Des Moines College was not affiliated with the name Des Moines University during the 1920s until closure in 1929.

The 2020 Class COM (College of Osteopathic Medicine) has an average GPA of 3.63, an average science GPA of 3.57, and an average MCAT score of 29 and 506. The median age is 24 years with students aged between 20 up to 39 years. Of the total class size of 221 students, 41% were female and 59% were male.

COM 2017 class has an average GPA of 3.68 with an average GPA of science of 3.68. The average MCAT is 28.2.

In order to be considered for admission, you must have a bachelor's degree or complete the requirements for a degree prior to enrollment. The degree must be from a regionally accredited institution. Each course of study is acceptable for applications but the most common are biology and chemistry respectively. All accepted students will be required to pay and complete a criminal background check and before matriculation, and during each year enrollment at Des Moines University. During the 2015-2016 application cycle, DMU COM received 5,062 applicants with 225 matriculations at a rate of about 4.44%.
