California State University, Dominguez Hills (also known as CSUDH , Dominguez Hills , or Cal State Dominguez Hills ) is a state university within the school system of the 23 states of California State University (CSU). Located in the city of Carson, California in the South Bay region, Los Angeles County and was founded in 1960.
In the autumn of 2016 the university had a total enrollment of 14,731 students consisting of 12,632 students (85.8%) and 2,099 post-baccalaureate (14.2%), with more than half of the student population identifying as the first in their family to enter college. CSUDH is one of the most ethnically and economically diverse universities in the western United States. It enrolls the largest number and percentage of African American students from every CSU campus and has consistently ranked nationally as a top-level producer for minority students, including graduating more African American students than a California state university.
CSUDH offers 45 majors for Bachelor degrees, 23 different Master's degrees, a variety of single, multi-subject and specialized teaching credentials and a number of undergraduate, postgraduate and post-bachelor certificate programs in five colleges: College of Arts and Humanities, College of Administration Business and Public Policy, Higher Education International School, High School of Health, Human Services and Nursing, and School of Natural Sciences and Behavior. The University is accredited by the WASC Senior College and the University Commission (WSCUC); designated as a Hispanic-Serving Agency; and accredited nationally in business administration, chemistry, clinical science (cytotechnology, medical technology), computer science, education, health sciences (orthotics and prosthetics), music, nursing, occupational therapy, public administration, social work (MSW), and theater art. The campus offers small classes for its students.
By 2015, Cal State Dominguez Hills is ranked # 11 in Master University's Ranking list at the Washington Monthly. This same year CSUDH is ranked 88th nationally by The Brookings Institution for added value for students graduating from there. Using the same methodology, The Economist puts the 63rd CSUDH in college rank 2015.
The campus is located in historic Rancho San Pedro, the oldest land grant in the Los Angeles area. The land is continuously owned by the Dominguez family through seven generations - from its concessions to Juan Jose Dominguez in 1784 until it was acquired by people from the state of California for the university. History
The foundation for what would become the CSU Dominguez Hills was built in 1960 when then California Governor Pat Brown provided state funds to begin construction of the campus. Originally located in Palos Verdes, California, and known as South Bay State College. The tentative name was changed to California State College at Palos Verdes in 1962. In 1964, architect A. Quincy Jones successfully devised a master plan for construction. Since the permanent campus has not been built, the first class began taught in 1965 at the California Federal Savings Bank in Rolling Hills Estates, California. The college begins with the registration of about 40 students.
In 1965 the designated location for the campus was moved to an area known as the Dominguez Hill in Carson.
